The Trifecta Writing Challenge consists of two different types of writing challenges, Trifecta and Trifextra. All challenges begin Mondays at 9 am EST. All challenges close Thursday at 7 pm EST.
Trifecta:
A one-word prompt will be posted on our home page. The chosen word will come from the Merriam Webster’s Online Dictionary. For the Trifecta Writing Challenge, we will always use the THIRD given definition. Please note the definition—we’re likely asking you to use the word in a different way than you typically do.
You should write a creative response using the given word. You must use the word, in its correct form, in your response. Your response can be no fewer than 33 and no more than 333 words.
Trifextra:
The rules of this challenge change with every prompt, but all of them will have something to with the number three (and most of them will require a 33-word response).
We’re looking for creativity, thoughtfulness, and attention to detail. Be artsy; be creative; stretch yourself. Write until your fingers bleed. We want to see your guts spilled out on the page.
Please note:
- We accept both fiction and nonfiction, but Trifecta is not the place for political rants that are not connected to an underlying story. It is also not the place for a journal-like blog post. Please don’t give us a rundown of your day. We are looking for creative responses that make us think and feel.
- If you are using photos or other digital art, please be sure to credit your sources. Click here for more information.
- Your Trifecta submission must stand on its own as a story. It’s fine to use our challenges as a way to further a longer piece you are working on, but please be sure that the segment you submit here is complete on its own, as many of us will not have read your entire work.
- Yes, grammar, spelling and punctuation count. Take yourselves seriously and submit only your best work.
- If your post contains material that the average person would find offensive, please leave a disclaimer at the top of your post. While we allow erotica and adult-oriented writing, we reserve the right to delete any links that are overtly offensive or discriminatory.
- Please try to submit new work. We’re not going to disqualify posts that were pre-written, but the intent of the challenge is to let our prompts inspire new writing.
Once you have written a response, you must then post it to your blog and enter your blog post’s url in the linky form on Trifecta’s home page. You must link to the post where your response is located; links to your blog’s home page will not be accepted. Please also link back to Trifecta’s home page somewhere in your post.
The editors will carefully read all entries. The top three entries will be mentioned on the weekend blog post, and the best-written entry for that week will be posted in its entirety on www.trifectawritingchallenge.com. First place winners can also grab this swanky graphic to display on their blogs.
